The Red Devils revealed on November 1 that the former Sporting boss would be taking over at Old Trafford following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, "subject to work visa requirements". According to , that paperwork is yet to be completed and signed off.

With that in mind, Amorim cannot begin work in Manchester on his intended start date. Until clearance has been received, the 39-year-old will be unable to oversee official duties – including training sessions with the squad that he has inherited.

Amorim does, however, have time on his side as another international break has been reached. His first game in charge of United will not be taken in until the Red Devils pay a visit to Premier League new boys Ipswich on November 24, although he will certainly want to get his feet under the desk well before that date.

Amorim, who won his final game as Sporting boss 4-2 and was treated to an emotional farewell by players and fans, has said of the challenge that he is taking on: “I feel ready for the new challenge. I’m not naive, I know it’s going to be very different, very difficult. I’m at peace now, I can focus on my new job and I’m looking forward to starting. I know it will be difficult to reproduce what I have here anywhere else, but there are other places with different exposure and pressure.”
