Gonzalo Higuain is in advanced talks with Arsenal ahead of a £22million transfer, according to his father.
The Sun are reporting that the Argentine striker’s Dad, Jorge Higuain, has revealed that a move to the Premier League is close to being complete.
“Nothing has yet been signed but I assure you the negotiations between the clubs are at an advanced stage,” he insisted.
“We won’t agree a contract before the clubs reach a transfer deal. I’m sure Arsenal made a big offer, and Juventus.”
If the Gunners do complete the £22m deal, Higuain will break the club’s transfer record with the deal surpassing the £15million transfer of Andrey Arshavin from Zenit St. Petersburg.
The forward scored 16 goals for Madrid last season from his 28 league appearances, and his pace and finishing has been tipped to terrorise Premier League defences.
Boss Arsene Wenger is keen to strengthen his side early in the transfer window, and believes Higuain can be key to helping the club once again challenge for the title.
The Frenchman has been given a £70million transfer kitty to spend this summer, with Higuain making just a small dent in that if a deal can be finalised.
The Gunners are still being linked with Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, but any deal would become even more unlikely if Wenger brings Higuain to the Emirates.
Will Higuain do well at Arsenal? Is he what the Gunners need?
