Liverpool star Cody Gakpo has revealed that Lionel Messi was his childhood idol, while giving an ultimate compliment to former team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Netherlands international was hit with a series of questions about his career and some of the best players he has come up against. And in it, he sung the praises of some well-known faces over the years.

The 26-year-old was quizzed about who he grew up idolising, the best passer of the ball he's seen, the greatest defender he's faced, his favourite games and goals, and more. Although he is no longer team-mates with Alexander-Arnold, following his move to Real Madrid, he still appreciates his ability.

In an interview with GOAL Global, the Liverpool man lauded the likes of Alexander-Arnold, Messi, and former Chelsea ace Thiago Silva.
Question: "Which player did you want to be when growing up?"
Gakpo: "Messi."
Q: Who is the best player you have played against?
Gakpo: "Messi."
Q: Who is the best passer of a ball you've ever seen?
Gakpo: "Trent [Alexander-Arnold]."
Q: Who is the hardest defender you have ever faced?
Gakpo: "Thiago Silva, one time."
Q: What is the best game you've played in?
Gakpo: "In the World Cup, a 2-2 draw with Argentina was an iconic game. The 7-0 against [Man] United as well."
Q: What is the best goal you've ever scored?
Gakpo: "The second goal [of his goals] against [Man] United."
